A house with history – Built in 1441

The building that now houses the Hotel & Restaurant Zum Nachtwächter was built in 1441. Dendrochronological analyses of the oak timbers confirm the precise year of construction and, according to the State Office for the Preservation of Monuments in Karlsruhe, make it the oldest known rural residential building in the Karlsruhe administrative district.
The timber-framed architecture impressively documents how people built and lived in the Middle Ages.

Renaissance extension from 1560

In 1560, a representative extension with a living room and chamber was built on the street side.
The "parlor" still shows today:

  • an original beam and plank ceiling with paint finish

  • fine Renaissance painting in the compartments

  • a nearly completely preserved window reveal
The extension was an expression of the builder's high standard of living.

Historical traces in the interior

On the floor below, the present-day vintner's room, there is a large-format mural depicting "Judith beheading Holofernes" – a biblical motif whose original message remains unclear.
Original wooden structures, murals and architectural details are visible in several rooms, bringing the history of the house to life.

Timber framing with character – Exterior architecture

The facade features massive corner posts, three-dimensional timber framing, and elaborately painted panels. Typical of the 16th century, the stories project slightly outwards.
In contrast, the rear part of the house is a simple post-and-beam construction that reflects function and economy.

From residential building to listed building

Until very recently, the building was never used as an inn or hotel.
It was only through extensive, historically accurate renovation in the 1990s that today's use became possible.
In 1996, the restoration was awarded the Baden-Württemberg Monument Protection Prize.

The name “night watchman”

There was no historically documented name for the inn.
The operators deliberately chose the name "Zum Nachtwächter" (At the Night Watchman) because the last night watchman of Lienzingen once lived in this house.
The name thus connects the present-day business with the tradition of the place.
